Tambling Comes Out Shooting In The Second Half To Lead MCC Over Massasoit 82-61
Cougars To Play Roxbury CC in Championship Game Sunday; Winner Moves on to National Tournament
BROCKTON,MA – Callie Tambling (Manchester) had 32 points including ten three-point field goals to lead Manchester CC over host Massasoit CC 82-61 in the NJCAA, Division III Region 21 semi-final Saturday afterrnoon in Brockton, MA.
MCC (21-3) held a 29-25 halftime lead, but Tambling put the game away with eight consecutive three-pointers early in the second half. Massasoit falls to 17-9.
“It’s funny because she was 1 for 7 at halftime,” Turner said of Tambling. “She was really concerned about it and came out early to shoot and missed almost everything she took. And then she just came out on fire.”
Team Captain Erika Murphy had 18 points including 10 free throw in13 attempts. Shenielle Duncan-Clarke (Bloomfield) had 10 points and 12 assists while Ericka Sagay (Bloomfield) had eight blocks and 10 rebounds.
The Cougars will play Roxbury CC in the championship game on Sunday at 1pm in Brockton, MA. Roxbury (26-3) beat UConn-Avery Point (24-5) in Saturday’s other semi final game 79-68 in overtime. UCAP’s Karen Manning hit a three-pointer with 14 seconds left to tie the game at 62-all, but Roxbury outscored the Lady Pointers 17-6 in five minutes of overtime. Willeen Capeheart led Roxbury with 22 points, including seven in the five-minute overtime period.
The winner of Sunday’s game with play in the eight-team, NJCAA Division III National Championship Tournament March 9 – 13 in Rochester, MN.
“It’s going to be a tight one,” Turner said of the rematch against Roxbury. “We knew we were going to see them again and they knew they were going to see us again. And I really think we have a good chance of pulling it out. We just have to play strong, play tough and rebound very well and handle their pressure, but they are also going to get some pressure from us.”
Roxbury won the only meeting between the two teams, 67-54, on December 22 at the Reggie Lewis center in Boston.
