Cougars Gain Early Lead; Contain Knights in Second Half in 64-44 Home Victory
MANCHESTER – Ericka Sagay (Bloomfield) had a game-high 16 points as Manchester CC (20-1) held off CC of Rhode (9-13) in the second half for a 64-44 victory Saturday afternoon at the Great Path gym.
Shenielle Duncan-Clarke (Bloomfield) and Kasiana Goodman (Waterbury) had 11 points apiece as MCC won its ninth straight. Sagay added nine rebounds while Goodman pulled down eight.
MCC held a 32-14 lead at the half, but CCRI played the Cougars nearly even in the second half, scoring 30 points to MCC’s 32.
“CCRI is a good team,” assistant coach Peter Harris said. “They have been doing that to almost everyone. They were down 25 points at the half in their last game and lost 63-62. They are a second half team.”
Ashley Fry led CCRI with 14 points.
“In the first half, we played very well,” Harris said. “We fought over the screens and didn’t allow them to shoot 3-point shots. In the second half, we got a little more complacent. We had two weeks off, so I think we got a little bit tired.”
The Cougars hadn’t played since January 29 due to weather and have two games remaining before they begin their Region 21 title defense at the Reggie Lewis Center on Saturday, February 26.
The Cougars host Holyoke CC Tuesday (Feb 15) at 6PM and close out the regular season with a home game vs. Globe Institute on February 20 at 1PM.
