Eight Sophomores Play Their Last Home Game in 68-47 Victory Over Globe Institute
MANCHESTER – Ericka Sagay (Bloomfield) scored 18 points and grabbed 14 rebounds as Manchester CC (22-1) beat Globe Institute of Technology 68-47 Saturday afternoon at Great Path Academy gym.
Callie Tambling (Manchester) had 14 points, including two 3-pointers while Jazlynn Canino (East Hartford) had 12 points and 11 rebounds for MCC.
The win gave Manchester its second 11-game win streak of the season.
The Cougars will defend their NJCAA Region 21 title next weekend (Feb 26-27) at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston. Game times and pairings will be announced Tuesday (Feb 22).
Al-Nisa Fish led Globe (6-13) with 15 points
MCC honored eight sophomores who were playing in their final home game in a ceremony before the game. Sagay, Tambling, Canino, Shenielle Duncan-Clarke (Bloomfield), Kate Gazdzicki (Colchester), Kasiana Goodman (Waterbury), Rebeca VanGuilder (Hartford), and Tyra Brooks (Waterbury) who did not play due to injury.
The eight players put together an impressive 46-5 record over two seasons, including a pair of runaway victories in last year’s Region 21 tournament and two more in the NJCAA National Division III Championship tournament in Rochester, Minnesota.
They played the first-ever game at the Great Path gym (11/12/09) where they lost just two games over two seasons. The eight sophomores set a program record with 24 wins as freshmen; received a visit from then-Governor Jodi Rell while earning respect in the basketball community, not only in New England, but nationally as well after finishing fourth in the eight-team national tournament last March.
