No Tournament for Women’s Basketball Team
MANCHESTER – The Manchester Community College Women’s basketball season ended Sunday afternoon with a 71-64 loss at Dean College.
The Cougars finished with a 17-3 record, but were not included in the National Junior College Athletic Association Division III Region XXI Tournament field because they incurred nine technical fouls over the course of the season. A Region XXI rule, which has been in place for five seasons, bans any team with eight or more technical fouls during a given season from their post-season tournament, with no exceptions.
“It’s an unfortunate situation,” MCC Head Coach Robert Turner said. “But it’s a Region XXI rule and we have to accept it.”
The Cougars were undefeated at home in 2008-09 and won 37 of 43 games over the past two seasons.
“I feel for the players,” Turner said after his fourth season at the college ended prematurely. “They beat all four teams selected for the tournament but won’t have a chance to play in it.”
Turner however, is proud of his team’s accomplishments both on and off the court.
