MCC Women Remain Undefeated in 2-1 Win Over Holyoke
MANCHESTER – (September 3) Julia Connor (Ellington) and Brittany Finger (Enfield) scored first half goals and the Cougars hung on in the second half in a 2-1 victory over Holyoke in their home opener at MCC. The Cougars are now 3-0 on the season.
Nicole Morehouse (Tolland) made 12 saves, including one on a ball that was on its way into the net midway through the second half. Morehouse reached over her head and deflected it with her fingertips, sending the potential tying goal over the crossbar and into the woods.
Connor drilled a shot into the top left corner from thirty feet to give MCC a 1-0 advantage after nine minutes of play, then moved into the back field and helped keep the Cougars of Holyoke off the board over the final 45 minutes of play. Finger scored her team leading fifth goal on an indirect kick 20 minutes into the game.
“Holyoke always works hard,” MCC Coach Alex Calpa said. “They may not be deep in numbers, but they always push it. We got those two goals early, but we deflated a little bit and let them back in the game.”
Calpa also noted the play of Lindsay Estok and Shelly Muratori in the backfield. “Lindsay played a phenomenal game and Shell was the player of the game. At outside back she stopped a lot of balls coming in, she rolled the ball up and distributed well, Calpa added.
