MCC Wins All Four Weekend Games; Improves to 15-3-1

MANCHESTER – (April 13, 2008) MCC swept a pair over double headers over the weekend, beating Roxbury CC by 21-1 and 36-0 scores on Saturday and Bunker Hill CC 10-1 and 10-0 Sunday at McCormick Complex. Both of Saturday’s games, and the second game on Sunday were called after five innings when the mercy-rule (10 run lead after five innings) was applied.

Dan Nelson (Glastonbury) and Ken Martinik (Thomaston) combined to pitch a seven-inning no-hitter in game one against Bunker Hill. The Bulldogs pushed across and unearned run in the first inning when the leadoff batter walked, moved to third a pair of errors and scored on a groundout. Nelson struck out three in two innings of work while Martinik (2-1) struck out five over five innings. He walked a batter in the fifth inning but stranded him on third.

MCC is now 15-3-1 on the season and 6-2 in Region XXI Division III play. The Cougars are 9-3 in Region XXI overall, including games against Division II teams.

There were many offensive standouts over the four games, but it would be tough to match Alan Fredriksson’s (Torrington) production. The leadoff hitter was 12 for 15 with 10 runs scored and 13 RBI, including a monster three-run homer in the first game against Roxbury. Mike Quagliaroli (Windsor Locks) had a pair of homers in the second game against Roxbury and was the winning pitcher against Bunker Hill in game two Sunday.

Catcher Derek Grundmann (Colchester) played in two of the games and was 6 for 8 with five runs scored, five RBI, three doubles and a triple. Dan Angelillo (Wethersfield) scored six runs and drove in five of the Cougars 36 runs in game two against Roxbury. Aaron Guilbeault (Lebanon) was had a 5 for 5 in game two Saturday with five runs scored.

Jeff Raymond (Hebron) improved to 4-0 on the season with four innings of work in game one on Saturday. The right-hander gave up just one earned run on one hit while striking out six and walking one. Steve Simon (Middlefield) struck out the first nine batters he faced in game two Saturday en route to his first win of the season.
