MCC Makes It Five Straight With 70-46 Road Win

HOLYOKE, MA – Ericka Sagay (Bloomfield) had 17 points, 17 rebounds and seven blocks while leading MCC (5-0) to a 70-46 victory over Holyoke CC (2-2). Callie Tambling (Manchester) had 16 points and Shenielle “Shorty” Duncan-Clarke (Bloomfield) had 14 points, eight assists and nine steals.

MCC led by six at the half, and then took control of the game with a 23-9 run to open the second half.
“We decided to push the ball more, make them run more,” MCC head coach Robert Turner Jr. said. “If we picked up the pace, they couldn’t play with us and I think that was the difference in the second half and I don’t think they have the personnel to match up with that.”

Kim Martinez led Holyoke with 13 points.

Sagay and Duncan-Clarke were dominant, but MCC received a burst of speed from freshman Jaleesa Roy (Waterbury) who provides another weapon at both ends of the court.

“Jaleesa (9 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists) brings a lot of defense. Getting loose balls and playing hard and getting up and down the floor to get us some easy baskets,” Turner said of the freshman. “When you have someone like that, you have to let them run up and down the court.”

Notes: Nine of Tambling’s 16 points came on first half three-pointers…Kasiana Goodwin (Waterbury) had six rebounds while playing just eight minutes…Jazlynn Canino (East Hartford) and Elise Chase (Vernon) both fouled out late in the second half….all 17 players on the roster saw playing time…The Cougars have won seven straight .including the final two games at the national tournament in March…Turner, who is in his sixth season, has guided MCC to 81 victories.
