MCC Finishes Second in NJCAA Division III Region XXI Baseball Tournament
BROCKTON, Mass. (May 13) – Sophomore first baseman Patrick Lee went 3-for-5 with two doubles, two runs and three RBIs as second-seeded Massasoit Community College won the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division III Region XXI Baseball Tournament championship by defeating fourth-seeded Manchester Community College 8-5 Sunday afternoon.
The Cougars finished their season with a 17-17 record (2-2 NJCAA Division III Region XXI Baseball Tournament).
MCC sophomore Shane Legare (WILLINGTON), a 2005 third-team NJCAA All-American, hit his team-leading fourth home run of the season, the 12th of his career. Sophomore right fielder Jason Banks (STAFFORD SPRINGS), sophomore Nick Jones (EAST WINDSOR) and sophomore outfielder Andy Sauer (WILLINGTON) each recorded two hits.
Manchester Community College led 3-0 in the third inning on Legare’s three-run home run. The Cougars increased their lead to 5-1 in the top of the sixth on freshman outfielder Bubba Green’s (TORRINGTON) RBI fielder’s choice and Sauer’s two-out RBI single.
The Warriors (32-10-1, 3-0) scored six in the bottom of the sixth for their first lead, 7-5.
Massasoit CC sophomore right-hander Matt Medeiros entered the game with one out and the bases loaded in the top of the seventh and struck out the last two batters. He retired the next six batters in order in the eighth and ninth innings to record the save. Sophomore right-hander Nathan Berry (2-0) pitched the sixth inning for the win. Berry allowed one run, two hits and struck out one in one inning.
MCC freshman right-hander Liam Ohlmann (WALLINGFORD) went six innings, allowing seven runs (three earned), nine hits, four walks and one hit batter. Ohlmann (2-6) struck out six. Jones pitched two relief innings and allowed one run, three hits and one walk. He allowed his first earned run since an April 7 home game against Northern Essex Community College. Jones went 7-0 with 60 strikeouts and a 0.46 earned-run average in 59 1/3 innings in 2007. He had a 13-0 overall record in his junior college career, including 6-0 at the University of Connecticut at Avery Point in 2006.
Manchester Community College defeated top-seeded Holyoke Community College 8-0, lost to Massasoit Community College 2-1 and beat third-seeded Northern Essex CC 12-2 to reach the final in the double-elimination tournament.
