MCC Advances to NJCAA Division III Region XXI Tournament Championship Round
BROCKTON, Mass. (May 12) – Sophomore Nick Jones (EAST WINDSOR) went 3-for-4 with two home runs and five RBIs and freshman right-hander Jeff Raymond (HEBRON) pitched a complete-game four-hitter as the fourth-seeded Manchester Community College baseball team advanced to the championship round of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division III Region XXI Baseball Tournament with a 12-2 eight-inning win over third-seeded Northern Essex Community College Saturday afternoon.
The Cougars (17-16 overall, 2-1 NJCAA Division III Region XXI Tournament) lost to second-seeded Massasoit Community College 2-1 in a second-round game earlier in the afternoon.
MCC plays at Massasoit CC (31-10-1, 2-0) in the championship round at 11 a.m. Sunday. If Manchester Community College defeats Massasoit Community College, there will be a 3 p.m. final. The 2007 NJCAA Division III Region XXI champion receives an automatic bid to the NJCAA Division III Baseball Championship on May 19-25 in Tyler, Texas.
The Knights (18-15, 1-2), the 2006 NJCAA Division III Region XXI champion, were eliminated from the tournament after losing to the Cougars.
Jones hit a two-run home run in the fifth inning and a three-run homer in the eighth. These home runs, his first two of the season, traveled an estimated 370 feet each to straightaway left field.
Manchester Community College sophomore right fielder Jason Banks (STAFFORD SPRINGS), sophomore middle infielder Aaron Granahan (THOMASTON) and freshman Derek M. Grundmann (COLCHESTER) each totaled two hits. Banks had a two-run single and freshman outfielder Bubba Green (TORRINGTON) a two-run double in the four-run second.
Raymond (3-2) allowed two runs (one earned), walked none and struck out four for the win. Sophomore Joe Tellier (6-1) went six-plus innings, allowing eight runs, 12 hits and two walks. Tellier struck out four.
In the first game, sophomore Kenneth Gould had an RBI single in Massasoit Community College’s two-run eighth.
MCC closed to 2-1 in the bottom of the eighth as Jones singled and later scored on an error.
Manchester Community College sophomore outfielder Andy Sauer (WILLINGTON) went 2-for-4 in the Massasoit CC game.
MCC sophomore right-hander Shane Legare (WILLINGTON) allowed two runs (one earned), eight hits and no walks and hit three batters in nine innings. Legare (2-3) struck out three.
Massasoit Community College freshman right-hander Peter Wolstenholme pitched a complete-game six-hitter. Wolstenholme (3-4) allowed an unearned run, walked none and struck out three.

Take Route 128/95 or Route 3/93 South to Route 24 South. Take Route 27 South off Route 24. At the second set of lights, take a left (Pleasant St.). Continue straight on Pleasant St. for 2 miles and take a right onto Warren Ave. Follow Warren Ave. for 1 mile and take a right onto Winthrop St. The field is ½ mile on the left.

Exit the college at Thatcher St. Take a right onto Thatcher St. and follow the road until you reach the traffic lights. Take a left onto Grove St. and your first right onto Lawrence St. Stay on Lawrence St. until you reach Main St. Take a left onto Main St. and a quick right onto Winthrop St. The field is ¾ of a mile on the left.

Exit the parking lot and take a right onto Marciano Way. Take a right onto Winthrop St. At the end of Winthrop is Main St. Take a left onto Main St. and a quick right onto Lawrence St. Take a left onto Grove St. and at the lights take a right onto East St. From East St., take a left onto Pine St. and at the fork, bear right onto Thatcher St. The college is ¾ of a mile on the left.
