MANCHESTER, Conn. – Manchester Community College sophomore pitcher Liam Ohlmann (WALLINGFORD) was a recipient of the Jeff Gallagher Sportsmanship Award as a member of the Stamford Robins of the Atlantic Collegiate Baseball League (ACBL). The award is named for an outfielder for the Scranton Red Soxx of the ACBL in the 1980s who was unfortunately killed in an auto accident after a preseason tryout/workout. He was an outstanding young man and played at Stetson University. His family still resides in the Scranton area.
The Robins are considered to be an all-star college baseball team. They recruit their players from colleges around the nation and over the last four Major League Baseball drafts, they have had 33 players signed to play baseball professionally. The league is sponsored by the NCAA and Major League Baseball. The Robins will have a new home for 2008 in Peekskill, NY.
“In 2008, Liam will be looked upon to anchor a young pitching staff. His veteran presence will be a stabilizing force in guiding our younger pitchers through the rigors of a 50-plus game schedule,” said Head Coach Chris Strahowski. In 2007, Liam had a 2-6 record with a 3.71 ERA. His record was not indicative of his performance, as he struck out 54 batters in only 46 innings. He tossed a 2-hit shutout against Quinsigamond CC on April 9th. Possession of excellent off-speed pitches to complement his low-90s fastball should elevate Liam to an elite pitcher in the Northeast at any level.
