Garrison Saves Both Games as Cougars Sweep UConn – Avery Point

Groton, CT – (April 27, 2008) MCC took two games UConn-Avery Point in Groton Sunday afternoon by 4-3 and 3-2 scores. Kevin Garrison (Berlin) closed both games, picking up his third and fourth saves of the year.

Garrison came in the second game with a 3-1 lead and the bases loaded and none out in the seventh inning. He induced a 6-4-3 double play and got the final out on a fielder’s choice, 6-4. Garrison pitched three innings shutout innings combined, allowing one hit and two walks.

Liam Ohlmann (Wallingford/Choate) improved to 5-1 with a five inning, six-strikeout effort in the first game, giving up three runs (two earned), four hits and three walks. In game two Dan Nelson (Glastonbury) went six plus innings, giving up two unearned runs. Nelson (1-2) scattered four hits with four strikeouts, a walk and two hit batsmen.

Brian Hager (Burlington) was 1 for 1 with two sacrifice bunts and an RBI in the first game and 3 for 3 in the second. Pedro Acevedo (New Britain) and Mike Quagliaroli (Windsor Locks) were each 2 for 3 in the first game. Quagliaroli added an RBI single in MCC’s three-run third inning in game two while Peter Burgio (Bolton) drove in the other two with a single.

UConn-Avery Point (32-8) was ranked #7 in the April 23 Ringor/NJCAA Division II Baseball Poll. MCC is now 24-8-2 overall. The Cougars lost a pair of games to Eastern Connecticut’s JV on Saturday in Willimantic 12-2 and 6-4.

MCC will return to Willimantic Wednesday afternoon for a single game against Eastern’s JV and host Monroe College Thursday in a single game on Thursday starting at 3:30pm.
