Bycholski Named to NJCAA Division III All-Region XXI Women’s Basketball First Team

MANCHESTER, Conn. (March 6) – Manchester Community College freshman center Aimee Bycholski (MANCHESTER) was named to the 2005-06 National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division III All-Region XXI women’s basketball first team and sophomore guard Laila Lemming Falkenberg (RODOVRE, DENMARK) received honorable-mention recognition.

“I am so proud of Aimee and Laila,” first-year MCC coach Robert C. Turner Jr. said. “These two young women represent our program well on and off the court.

“Aimee adapted quickly to collegiate basketball and improved as the season went on. I believe she will be even better next season. I already miss Laila. She is a true leader and basketball player. I wish she had another year of eligibility left.”

Bycholski, a 5-11 center and the only MCC player to start all 19 games, had team-bests of 12.3 points and 9.7 rebounds per game. She led the Cougars in scoring nine times (tied for the team lead twice), including the final two games. Bycholski recorded a team-high 11 double-doubles and a scored 10 or more points in a game a team-best 15 times. She totaled a career-high 22 points three times – in a 62-28 win over Northern Essex Community College on Jan. 14, in a 70-63 loss to Bunker Hill Community College on Jan. 22 and in an 86-52 win over Springfield Technical Community College on Feb. 1. Bycholski had a career-high 16 rebounds on Jan. 22 against Bunker Hill CC, one short of tying a team high for an individual this season.

Laila Lemming Falkenberg

Falkenberg, a captain, appeared in 16 games this season, seven in double-figure scoring. She had 10 or more rebounds in a game seven times, including five games with 14 or more. She recorded 17 rebounds on Jan. 14 against Northern Essex CC, tying freshman forward LaTresa Lynn Ferrell (EAST HARTFORD) for a team high for an individual this season. Falkenberg averaged 10.4 points and 9.6 rebounds per game in 2005-06. She concluded her 33-game career with 300 points (9.1 ppg) and 229 rebounds (6.9 rpg).

MCC finished the 2005-06 season with an 8-11 overall record, 6-4 in NJCAA Division III Region XXI. The Cougars lost to Gateway Community College 61-49 in an NJCAA Division III Region XXI Women’s Basketball Tournament semifinal game on March 4.
