Jamestown CC Beats MCC Despite Rivera’s 23 Point Effort

MANCHESTER, CT – Arianna Rivera (Manchester) led all scorers with 23 points, but it wasn’t enough as visiting Jamestown CC beat Manchester CC 57-35 Saturday afternoon in an out-of-region game.

Kelsey Beaver, Alex Smith and Ashlyn Nicherson had 10 points appiece for Jamestown (8-3). The Jayhawks took a commanding 18-1 lead early, and held a 35-13 advantage at the half, but the Cougars responded over the final 20 minutes as the teams played to a 22-22 tie.

“We came out slow,” MCC head coach Katie DaCosta said. “We went down 18-1, but we were able recompose ourselves and then I think we played a pretty even match from that point out.”

Rivera, who also had 10 rebounds and six steals, scored Manchester’s first 16 points before Kailee Doerfler (Tolland) hit a layup with 2:21 left in the first half. Haley Cole (Hebron) had 10 points, six steals and six rebounds for MCC (2-5).

Rivera’s numbers stood out on the stat sheet, but DaCosta was quick to cite the efforts put out by the other six players wearing the MCC uniform.

“Ari was able to step it up today, but her teammates let her shine,” DaCosta said of Cole, Doerfler, Allie Nuccio (Tolland), Janell Smith (Malone, NY) Brittanymarie Barber (East Hartford), and Kayla Facey (Windsor). “They put her in a position where she could finish. Everyone who stepped on that court today left everything they had on it.”

MCC travels to CCRI next Saturday (December 15) for 1PM game.
