Madera’s Arm and Bat Help MCC Gain Split with Suffolk-Selden

Staff Ace Drives in Game Winner After Pitching Four Shutout Innings

MANCHESTER – Kevin Madera (Newington) hit a two-run single in the bottom of the sixth inning to break a 2-2 tie and give Manchester CC 4-2 victory and a double-header split against Suffolk Selden CC Sunday afternoon in Manchester.

Madera also started the game on the mound for MCC (17-13) and pitched four shutout innings. Justin Thomas (East Lyme) pitched a scoreless sixth inning for his third victory of the year and Mike Methot (Bristol) picked up his fifth save of the season with a 15-pitch, scoreless seventh inning.

Suffolk Selden CC (18-8) took advantage of four MCC errors in the first game to win 8-6 and give head coach Eric Brown his 500th career victory. Joey Allison (East Hartford) was 3 for 4 with a double, a run scored and stolen base in the first game while A. J. Lowers (Newington) was 4 for 7 with two runs scored, a double, RBI and stolen base on the afternoon.

“We hit the heck out of the ball in the first game,” MCC head coach Chris Strahowski said. “But it seems like we wait till the other team has a multiple run inning before we get it started.” SSCC scored five unearned runs in the fourth to take a 6-1 lead but MCC answered back with three in its half of the fourth and two more in the fifth before Suffolk put the game away with single runs in the sixth and seventh. We can’t get behind like this, especially against good teams.”

Strahowski had more to be happy about in the second game.

“They threw some of their better guys at us today and to be able to get a win is very good,” Strahowski added.

Carroll and Sitaro Throw Complete Games in Sweep over Roxbury

MANCHESTER – Ryan Carroll (Newington) and Justin Sitaro (Rocky Hill) threw complete games as Manchester CC (16-12, 5-0) swept Roxbury CC (0-8, 0-4) 5-1 and 5-0 in a Region 21, Division doubleheader Saturday afternoon in Manchester.

Sitaro allowed just one hit – a one-out double in the first inning – while striking out 12 over seven innings.

“They kept us in it, they threw strikes,” Strahowski said of Carroll and Sitaro. “Both were very good with their pitch counts, throwing a lot of fastballs and giving us a chance to get in there and hit.

Joey Allison (East Hartford) had a pair of triples in the second game.

Strahowski had high praise for a much improved Roxbury team.

“They are very athletic, make the plays they are supposed to make and are much improved,” Strahowski said. “ I told (Roxbury head coach) Ed (Neal) with 12 freshmen they are going to be okay if he keeps them as sophomores.”
