Navy Prep hands MCC second loss of the season, 69-56

MANCHESTER, CT – Naval Academy Preparatory School got 20 points from Alex Membreno en route to a 69-56 victory over Manchester Community College Thursday night at Great Path Academy gym.

Navy Academy (4-2) had a ten point run early in the game to take a 14-4 lead and held the lead through the rest of game that they never relinquished. Kacey Liscomb had 15 points and Teronda Brown had 13 points for the visitors. Membreno had four three pointer.

“They work hard and are an intelligent group,” NAP second year Head Coach Allie Desisto said. “They came together quickly for a first year team.”
Naval Academy Preparatory School was founded in 1845 and is located at the Naval Station in Newport, RI. It is a one year, post graduate school designed to prepare candidates for the Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD.

MCC (11-2) was led by Tyra Brooks (Waterbury) with a season-high 14 points and six assists and Ericka Sagay (Bloomfield) who had 12 points and eight rebounds. It was MCC’s first loss at the GPA gym in six games since it opened on November 12. The Cougars also saw their 16- game home winning streak come to an end. Their last home loss came on February 28th 2008 against UConn-Avery Point at the East Catholic gym.

“We didn’t play hard the whole game,” MCC head Coach Robert Turner, Jr. said. “We have areas we need to work on, particularly defense. Hopefully next time we will have a better game.”

NAPS took a 32-22 lead into the half and opened up a twenty point late lead in the game with a fast break and good outside shooting.MCC shot just 35 % from the floor (25 for 71). Amanda Colon (New Britain) had six points and six rebounds for MCC.

MCC is off until Thursday, January 14 when they travel to Concord, New Hampshire for a non-region game against New Hampshire Tech starting at 7pm.
