MCC win streak at eight after convincing win over UConn-Avery Point
MANCHESTER, CT – Ericka Segay (Bloomfield) led Manchester CC (8-0) with 16 points and 21 rebounds in a 68-54 victory over UConn-Avery Point (8-2) at the Great Path Academy Gym Monday night.
Shenielle Duncan-Clarke (Bloomfield) had 12 points, six assists, six rebounds and four steals. Jazlynn Canino (East Hartford) followed with 11 points and Kasiana Goodman (Waterbury) checked in with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
“We did an excellent job,” MCC Head Coach Robert Turner, Jr. said. “I’m really proud of my girls. This carried over from Saturday (75-48 win at Dean College). The way they play defense, they can compete with anybody in our region.”
Sagay controlled the game from under both baskets, but picked up 13 of her rebounds in the defensive end.
“She played big,” Turner said of the 6’2” freshman center. “But everybody contributed like they are supposed to and all the parts were working.”
UCAP had pressure on MCC early and held a 13-12 lead through the first ten minutes of the game, but the Cougar press inspired a ten point run, and they took a commanding 32-17 lead into the half.
UCAP, the defending Division III, Region 21 champions had just three subs on the bench and could not keep up with the pace set by Turner’s Cougars.
“We did what we know how to do,” Sagay said. “We ran the floor and tried to keep everything at a fast pace and take our time with our passes.”
UCAP’s Karen Manning (Bolton) led all scorers with 18 points. Brianna Riley (Hopkinton, RI) had 14 points for the Lady Pointers.
