MCC Women run win streak to six games with 55-37 road victory

WORCESTER, MA – Manchester Community College made it six in a row with a 55-37 road victory over Quinsigamond CC Thursday night. Ericka Segay (Bloomfield) had 12 points, 16 rebounds and seven steals for the Cougars (6-0).

MCC also received double-digit scoring from Pre-Season All-American Erika Murphy (Torrington/12 points), Manchester’s Callie Tambling (10 points) and East Hartford’s Jazlynn Canino (10 points/11 rebounds).

MCC held a 22-13 edge at half time despite shooting just 21% (9 for 42) from the floor over the first 20 minutes of the game. The Cougars opened the second half with a 22-4 run and took a 44-17 lead, but Quinsigamond (1-8) outscored MCC 20-11 over the final ten minutes to narrow the gap. Rachel Dylewicz led the Chiefs with nine points.

The Cougars controlled a Region 21 opponent in the second half for the second time in as many games.
“We have to take our time to settle into the game,” MCC head Coach Robert Turner, Jr. said. “Then they pick up on what the other team is doing and capitalize on the mistakes that they make.”

Despite the accuracy lapses, Turner was happy with the way his team played and is looking forward to the team’s next two games.

“Defensively we were fine,” Turner said. “Offensively we missed a couple of shots — we needed to warm up a bit.” The 55 points was a season low for the Cougars who ended up shooting 29% (23-86) from the floor.

MCC travels to Dean College (3-4) Saturday for a 1 PM game against the NJCAA Region 21 Division II Bull Dogs before returning home to host UConn-Avery Point (7-1) at Great Path on Monday at 6 PM.

“I’m looking forward to playing Dean,” Turner said. “That should be a test for us. I think it will be a competitive game and will be a good tune-up right before that big game with UConn. We should have a lot of fun.”
