MCC Places Four on All-Region XXI Team

Shanika Hines (Manchester) and Jhenel Franklin (Windsor) were named to the National Junior College Athletic Association All-Region XXI Division III first team, while teammates Katurah Andrews (East Hartford) and Erika Murphy (Torrington) were second team selections.

Hines, a former Connecticut All-State and state champion player from Manchester High was third among all NJCAA Division III players averaging 22.3 points per game. The pre-season All-American played in all 43 MCC games over two seasons, going over the 700 point mark in her final game as a Cougar on February 22nd.

Franklin was also an All-State player and state champion at Windsor High and led all NJCAA Division III players in assists with 203 (10.5 per game) this past season. The 5’8” sophomore averaged nearly a triple-double with 10.2 rebounds and 9.3 points while blocking 29 shots.

Andrews was a key part of MCC’s two-year run that produced 37 wins in 43 games. The sophomore’s 38 blocks were 14th among NJCAA Division III players and she led the team with 65 steals. Andrews averaged 14.5 points per game while pulling down 7.1 rebounds.

Murphy, the lone MCC freshman recognized with post-season honors, led the 17-3 Cougars in shooting percentage (50.9) and trailed only Franklin in minutes played, averaging nearly 33 per game. Murphy averaged 18.5 points and 8.3 rebounds while collecting 34 steals.
