MCC Defeats Holyoke CC in NJCAA Division III Region XXI Tournament Opener

BROCKTON, Mass. (May 11) – Sophomore right-hander Nick Jones (EAST WINDSOR) pitched a seven-hit shutout and freshman catcher Kevin Clements (VERNON) went 2-for-2 with four RBIs as the fourth-seeded Manchester Community College baseball team defeated top-seeded Holyoke Community College 8-0 in a first-round National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division III Region XXI Baseball Tournament game Friday afternoon. The game ended after the seventh inning due to the eight-run rule.

The Cougars (16-15 overall, 1-0) play at second-seeded Massasoit Community College (30-10-1, 1-0), a 9-6 first-round winner over third-seeded Northern Essex Community College, at 11 a.m. Saturday. The winner advances to the championship round at 11 a.m. Sunday. The losing team meets the Holyoke CC-Northern Essex CC winner in a 3 p.m. Saturday elimination game.

Jones (7-0) recorded his first shutout this season, allowing seven hits and no walks in seven innings. He is 13-0 in his career, including 6-0 in 2006 at University of Connecticut at Avery Point. Jones struck out four to increase his team-leading total to 60 in 57 1/3 innings. His earned-run average dropped to 0.31.

MCC middle infielder Aaron Granahan (THOMASTON) and sophomore Shane Legare (WILLINGTON) each totaled two hits. Granahan scored twice and Legare once.

Clements had two-run singles in the three-run second inning and two-run sixth.

Freshman right-handed starter Justin Hall (4-5) allowed four runs (three earned), two hits, four walks and two hit batters for Holyoke Community College (19-18, 0-1).
