Campus Construction Update

Two major construction projects – focused on safety – have begun that will impact travel to and from the  campus While the projects are underway,  please allow extra travel time.

Campus Site Improvement Project

This project is being undertaken in four phases and will continue through mid-November. It includes improvements to entrances, a redesigned bus loop and replacement of failing road sections and curbs. As the project progresses, there will be major changes to existing traffic patterns and parking including:

  • interruption to traffic flow,
  • rerouting of buses and establishing new temporary bus stops,
  • relocation of general drop-off and pickup areas, and
  • relocation of Child Development Center parking, staff/faculty parking and reserved parking.

UPDATE – November 30, 2016

The contractor will begin to replace damaged curbing and catch basins and install new areas of curbing and paving.

  • West Lot:
    • The first entrance and 30 percent of the parking area next to Lot E will be closed on Wednesday, November 30.
    • The CDC drop-off parking and reserved parking area will be relocated and closed on Wednesday, November 30.
  • East bus drop-off, near the library and GPA:
    • There will be a short closure of the loop.

Beginning Thursday, December 1, the contractor will install the new radius curbing and pave the road at the corners . There may be periodic lane closures. Areas affected are:

  • Corner of Founders Drive North and Ramey Drive
  • Corner of Ramey Drive and Bidwell Street

UPDATE – November 22, 2016  

The work on the main entry road, Great Path, will be completed this week.

  • Great Path will reopen on Monday, November 28.
  • The CTtransit bus will continue to pickup and drop-off at the AST/SSC bus loop; the shuttle from the commuter lot to the campus will be discontinued.

The contractor will begin to replace damaged curbing and paving across the campus. As a result,  there may be periodic closures of travel lanes and sections of the parking lot in these areas:

  • West Lot
  • Corner of Founders Drive North and Ramey Drive
  • East bus loop at GPA High Shool

The contractor has received notification that the bus shelter has been shipped.

  • Delivery date is anticipated to be this week or next.
  • Once delivered, installation will take approximately one week.
  • The shelter will be located at the AST bus loop and drop-off.

UPDATE – October 28, 2016

The work between Founders Drive South and South Lot is completed; the road and LRC loading dock are reopened.

The work in the AST/SSC loop and Faculty/Staff Lot E is completed.  The road, parking lot and bus loop will be opened no later than Monday, October 31.

  • The CTtransit bus will pickup and drop-off at the AST/SSC bus loop.
  • There is a new pickup and drop-off location near the SSC as indicated by the striped area to the right of the new fence.  No parking allowed, attendants need to remain with vehicles at this pickup and drop-off location.
  • There are new handicapped parking spaces in Faculty/Staff Lot E.  These are available for anyone who has a permit; they are not restricted to faculty and staff.

The contractor will begin to work on the main entry road, Great Path, on Monday, October, 31.

  • During this phase, Great Path will be closed.
  • Please use the Wetherell Street and the Ramey Drive entrances.
  • The goal is to reopen Great Path before the end of November.

The Town of Manchester construction activities continue on Spencer Street and Hillstown Road.  There is additional construction taking place near the highway intersection on Spencer Street, exit 1 off I384.

  • Using exit 2 instead of exit 1 may be the less congested route to campus.

The contractor will also begin replacing the speed bumps with speed tables, and replacing failed curbing in West Lot.

  • There may be periodic closures of travel lanes and sections of the parking lot during this work.

Phase D: Hillstown Road Entrance (Great Path) – Friday, October 21 through Wednesday, November 9

  • Entrance will be closed.
  • Detour signs will be placed to divert traffic to the Wetherell Street entrance

Phase C: Founders Drive South – Monday, October 10 through Thursday, October 20

  • A section of Founders Drive South between the South Lot and the LRC loading dock will be closed.
  • Detour signs will be placed to assist traffic flow.
  • LRC loading dock will remain open

Phase B: Bus Loop and Bus Shelter – Monday, August 29 through Monday, October 3

Construction Update Map

  • AST bus loop will be closed.
  • Reserved parking will be relocated to the rear of SSC, North Lot in GPA and West Lot.
  • Staff/faculty Lot E will be closed and new temporary staff/faculty parking will be created in West Lot.
  • Child Development Center parking will be relocated to the West Lot.
  • CT Transit bus pickup and drop-off will be temporarily relocated to the GPA bus pull-off on North Founders Drive.
  • Hartford Transit District/ADA Paratransit Service pickup and drop-off will be temporarily relocated to the east drop-off loop near GPA and the library.
  • Student/staff/faculty pickup and drop-off will be temporarily relocated to a section of West Lot.
  • Detour signs will be placed to close off the access road to Lot E and the west bus loop.

Phase A: Bidwell Street Entrance (East Campus) – Monday, August 15 through Thursday, August 25

  • Entrance will be closed.
  • Detour signs will be placed to divert traffic to the Wetherell Street entrance.

Hillstown Road Project

Concurrent to the campus project, the town is making improvements to the safety features and traffic flow on Hillstown Road. When complete, these will include a sidewalk on the west side of the road and an additional turn lane from Hillstown Road onto Spencer Street.
