Fourth Annual Asian Pacific American Heritage Month Celebration
May 2, 2017
MCC held opening ceremonies for its Fourth Annual Asian Pacific American (APA) Heritage Month Celebration today, Tuesday, May 2, in GPA Commons. The event featured the annual APA Leadership Awards, honoring Zaheer Sharaf, president, Pakistani American Association of Connecticut, with the Community Leadership Award in honor of Patsy Matsu Takemoto Mink; Olivia Chiang, assistant professor of visual fine arts, with the Employee Leadership Award in honor of Grace Lee Boggs; and Abdelrahim Hamed, with the College Student Leadership Award in honor of William Tong. The keynote address was delivered by Abul Islam, PE, FASCE (founder and president/CEO of AI Engineers, Inc.). Mr. Islam came to the U.S. from Pakistan and settled in the South-Asian enclave of Jamaica, Queens, New York City in the early 1980s. He immersed himself in the culture and professionalism of the American engineering industry as an entrepreneurial Asian-American trailblazer in architecture, engineering and construction. He is called a testament to the spirit of Asian America and a living homage to the American Dream. A reception followed, catered by Indigo Indian Bistro of Manchester.
